IwriteMusic.org registers, preserves and provides you with the type of proof needed for copyright-protecting your songs!
Specifically, we provide you with an email receipt for certificate of registration, and a third party timestamp for proof of your songs' content and creation dates! All songs are stored in a searchable online database along with offline back up copies of the database
Many think you get "copyright protection" by being the first to register a song with the Copyright Office. This is a common misconception. From the U.S. Copyright Office:
"No registration or other action in the Copyright Office is required to secure copyright." (Quoted from the U.S. Copyright Office)
Under U.S. federal law (and the laws of most civilized countries - see answer 6 below for a list), whoever can prove prior creation of a song in physical form owns the rights to that song.
IwriteMusic.org provides formal, independent, third-party written verification of this information!
Also known as the "poor man's copyright," has never ever held up in court.
This is not a recommended method for proving a creation date for your songs and compositions. Heres why:
What documentation do you think would be more persuasive in a copyright battle:
- A. producing an envelope or package with a postage date and no proof that it has not been tampered with Or
- B. the unbiased, sworn declaration, with a third party notarized timestamp and physical evidence prepared and maintained by an independent, established firm -- whose specific business is registering songs for copyright verification?
Please remember that posting to this site does not mean the material is given a copyright from the government. Others may have created the work first, or otherwise protected a prior right. However a copyright actually exists upon creation of any original work. To secure that right, the material must be original and must be published. Getting a copyright recognized by the government has been an expensive and time consuming process. It basically can only refer back to the date the material was mailed to the U.S. Copyright office, unless additional evidence is given. Your Iwritemusic time stamp is intended to fill that gap, and let you prove ownership down to the minute. Posting here and indicating that your rights are reserved, may be all you need to discourage interlopers, and win a dispute down the road.
We still encourage you to eventually register your work with the Copyright office but if your budget is tight, you can instantly and freely prove your copyright protection by using IwriteMusic.org today!

7. What if someone claims I gave away my publishing or sold the rights to my song? Can IwriteMusic.org settle such disputes?
Neither Iwritemusic.org or the Copyright Office can help you out here. We can only help you prove when the song was submitted and its contents. If you sell or assign the rights to your songs publishing to someone else -- or work for someone who by the employment contract owns whatever you compose while so employed -- that requires a separate contract agreement. Whoever claims ownership or transfer rights (from you) to the song would be required to show evidence of such a contract. Always maintain the writers share of your songs publishing. Please see ASCAP or BMI for more information.
Well we certainly don't see that happening but in the event this site ceased to exist you will always have your proof in the form of the timestamped email sent for your songs registration. We will always maintain an offline tape archive of all song registrations and quarterly publish our database with the library of congress.
But don't take our word for it. Click here to be taken to the U.S. Copyright office circular which explains the procedures and most importantly what a copyright does and doesn't do.
